Detroit Jazz Vocal Workshop

Have you ever wanted to sing where vocal legends, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Aretha Franklin sang? Now is your opportunity. You're at the web-home of the Detroit Jazz Workshop, the innovative and transformative week-long experience that will help you become the vocalist you've been working to become.

Through a combination of Monday July 8 to Friday, July 12 solo sessions guided by professional vocalists, leveled group classes, and stage training, you will receive the keys to rising to the next steps of understanding and performing this wonderfully creative music.

Former singers receiving training from the DJVW are now top, first-call professionals in jazz. Vocalists like Olivia Van Goor and Emma Aboukasm are recent attendees and are now recording artists, leaders of their own groups, and have played jazz clubs and festivals like the Detroit Jazz Festival and Cliff Bells Jazz Club, as well as venues around the country.

Director of the vocal jazz workshop, April Tini is a former jazz instructor at Berklee College of Music and Wayne State University. Dr. Ellie Martin is an instructor at University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University, and Jiana Hunter is a former Western Michigan University Gold Company member, now the director of Henry Ford Community College's famous vocal jazz program. Besides the guidance of these pillars of vocal jazz, the workshop brings master-clinicians to you in hopes to inspire you with new points of view.

In your week with us, you will be spoiled, accompanied by supportive, professional jazz rhythm sections in both classes and performances, and will even have expert jazz accompanists in your private lessons.

You will receive your training at the location that featured performances by Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, and Billie Holiday: Music Hall Performing Arts Center in Detroit. At Music Hall, you will have access to the stage at Aretha's Jazz Cafe, where you receive stage chops and learn not only how to practice and rehearse jazz, but how to perform it.

The week will culminate with a celebration performance at Aretha's Jazz Cafe. You will get to demonstrate to your family and friends, what you learned through the week. They can enjoy a cocktail and bite to eat while being treated to a jazz show starring you.

Our instructors, with their combined 50 years of experience, are opening the door for you on your journey to become the jazz musician that you want to be. It's your turn to step forward. The stage is waiting for you.
