Middle School Jazz Workshop Participation

Participation for the Middle School Jazz Workshop is straightforward:

  • All students must have played their primary instrument for at least one year (as of the July workshop) to participate.

  • Advanced elementary students who meet the one-year requirement and are at least ten years old may register if they feel comfortable participating alongside older middle school students.

  • Students ages 13–14 who are graduating from middle school may choose either the high school or middle school workshop. They must choose one workshop.

  • Students who play more than one instrument are welcome to use a secondary instrument if it can be worked into the music.

  • Students on traditional jazz instruments—trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, piano, bass, and drums—will be accepted. We will also try to include non-traditional instruments such as flute, violin, or bass clarinet. If your student plays a non-traditional instrument, contact us and we’ll work together to make it happen.

  • Students will play a mixture of large-ensemble and small-group music. Strong reading skills are not required, but students will be expected to try. The level of music is appropriate for middle school musicians.

  • No enrolling student needs prior jazz or improvisation experience. That’s what we’re here to teach.

  • All master clinicians presenting to the high school and adult students will also present an exclusive, participatory clinic for the middle school workshop.

  • There is no audition process before or at the workshop. If you meet the conditions on the website, you are enrolled.

  • Your student’s security and safety are of primary importance. Middle school students receive their own lanyard and ID and will move through the workshop as a group. A faculty or staff member will always be in the room.

  • Middle school students should plan to bring a lunch. A vending machine with pop and treats is available.

  • Parents and guardians are welcome to stay in the rehearsal room. Couches, chairs, tables, and guest Wi-Fi are available if you need to work while your student is in session.

  • Multiple drummers, bassists, guitarists, or pianists may be selected. Everyone will get a chance to play. Percussion instruments may be assigned to students who are not playing on a particular tune.

  • A drum set and piano will be provided. All other students must bring their own instruments. Large instruments such as bass or tuba may be stored under lock and key during the week. Students are responsible for caring for and protecting their instruments.

  • Middle school students will perform a Sunday evening concert following the workshop at Aretha’s Jazz Café. This is a ticketed show for friends and relatives, showcasing what students learned during the week. An optional jam session will follow. Students will perform on the same stage where Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald once played. Tickets will be available for purchase during the week. Performing students do not need a ticket.

  • A professional photographer will provide photos of your student’s workshop and concert experience at no cost.

The exact summer schedule will be posted in the spring. If you have questions not covered on our website, please feel free to contact us!
